Do you want to help bring joy to an underprivileged child on Christmas?  Then donate to Toys for Tots. Student council is holding a contest for all first hour classes to see who can donate the most toys.

Toys for Tots is a nonprofit organization founded in 1947 by a U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. Social studies teacher Javier Martinez is a former Marine and helped organize Toys for Tots in our school.

“Toys for Tots accepts donations from anyone. They only accept new toys, no realistic looking weapons or stuffed animals. Stuffed animals typically aren’t accepted because it’s harder to tell if they’re new or not,” Martinez said.

Student council advisor Sally Wilson and the members of student council have worked with Toys for Tots for several years.

“Student council likes to help the community,” Wilson said.

The contest that is being held goes until Dec. 11.

“It’s based off of each individual student that brings in the most toys so if a class is larger they don’t have more of an advantage over smaller classes,” Wilson said.

Any new toys are acceptable for donations.

“I want students to think of one thing, just one thing they would really want for Christmas and donate that,” Wilson said.
