Ever since the rise of social media, student reading has gone from a normal pastime to a homework assignment. English teacher Christina Montalto has noticed that students don’t have enough patience to just sit down with a book and read anymore. According to Montalto, if social media and other electronic distractions didn’t exist, the amount of student reading would change.
“Students would have to find some way of entertaining themselves,” Montalto said.
Montalto’s favorite genre is fantasy. Her favorite books as an adult include Harry Potter, Game of Thrones and Odd Thomas. As a child, she enjoyed the Enchanted Forest Chronicles.
“[I have] always been drawn to those kinds of books,” Montalto said.
Presently, Montalto is reading Clash of Kings by George R. R. Martin. She recommends this book to fans of Lord of the Rings series. Clash of Kings has hints of a magical world.
“You’ll love and hate this story at the same time,” Montalto said.
