A hockey club team has been put together involving many students from different schools from around the area. These schools include Kaneland, Batavia, Oswego, and Aurora Christian. Senior Tyler Hilton, sophomore Mike Potvin, and sophomore Drew Larson are the trio from Kaneland that participate. Hilton and Potvin are both centers and are both assistant captains, and Larson is the starting goalie after only one year of previous hockey experience.
“This is an amazing and rare accomplishment in the hockey world,” Brian Boll the varsity club coach said.
So far, this mix of schools practices every Tuesday and Thursday at the Fox Valley Ice Rink Arena, where they focus on team systems and positioning. Coach Boll wants to focus on less individual work and more teamwork because it is so early in the season.
“We are still getting used to each other,” Boll said.
The team currently holds a record of 2-0 in their second tier of the season. They are also competing against some of the toughest teams in the state, which include Lemont, Providence Catholic and Leyden.
“We are in a very competitive division with several large-sized schools that have histories of strong hockey programs,” Boll said. “We are getting better and better every game.”
The team is still gelling and will continue to improve. This team has a lot of youth and room to improve.
“We just have a lot of younger guys. We just need to develop more,” Larson said.
Winning of course is every team’s goal, but for Boll it’s also about uniting the players, and having a team that functions well.
“We come from all throughout high school, and we all get along perfectly fine,” said Potvin.
