Experience is the biggest strength the varsity tennis team has this season, varsity coach Tim Larsen said.
“All of our doubles players are seniors at varsity level,” he said.
Junior Lindsay Jurcenko is the number one singles player for Kaneland, while Liz Webb and Olivia Emmanouil, both seniors, are its number one doubles team.
“We’ve been working a lot on specific shots we have to play versus specific teams,” Larsen said.
“We did a really good job this season,” sophomore Amelia Napiorkowski, varsity number two singles, said. “We have a lot of seniors on the team, so we have a lot of experience. There’s just a lot of talent this year,” Napiorkowski said.
Larsen said the team is fun to be around and competitive. He said that they really want to win.
“Wins are really about confidence,” Larsen said. “When we lose, we don’t feel as good, and it’s harder to play. When we win, our confidence gets higher and we play better.”
The varsity record for all matches is 5-6, and the team had a conference record of 3-3 at press dead.
“The teams that are closest to us as far as talent are Yorkville and Rochelle,” Larsen said. “The teams that we have the hardest time beating are Batavia and Geneva.”
The team also plays Saturday matches, which don’t count toward their overall score or record. Kelsey Lenhardt and Randi Bader, Kaneland’s number two doubles team, have won every Saturday match they’ve played, as of press dead.
“I think it’s pretty cool that so far on our Saturday tournaments we’ve placed well,” Larsen said.
“Everybody has their own qualities that are good. We are always working hard and doing our best,” freshman Maddie McMullen, JV number one singles, said. “Everybody is a good player.”
“It’s really cool when we win,” Larsen said. “Our confidence gets higher, and we play better.”
The Lady Knights played their last tournament of the season on Oct. 10, as they took part in the Western Sun Conference Tournament at their their home court.
