Like everything else this year, the varsity poms squad has its own set of goals for the year. They hope to master three new team skills; the Calypso Jump, the Helicopter Jump and have unison all team double pirouettes. The camp at North Illinois University gave the squad time to get to know one another through bonding activities that were set up for them.
“We’ve bonded more as a team,” sophomore Amy Croft said.
From having more upperclassmen to gaining new skills from their summer camp at North Illinois University. The team has many strengths this year; with more upperclassmen to help train the new team members. The team also has more members with skills in different areas which will allow them to be more creative in their choreography. The routines are strictly poma and kit based; the squad is striving to improve the difficulty and the speed of their routines. They also want to incorporate different colored poms
“It was hard remembering the routine[s] at first but its getting easier as the year goes [on]” freshman Nicole DiSandro said.
At NIU, the poms squad had three team members recognized as All American Dancers, the highest honor that the camp gave out. Senior Rebecca Krotz, Junior Tati Guererro, and Sophmore Amy Croft were all recognized as the All American Dancers. The girls that were recognized as All american dancers were invited to London. They will be participating in the New Years day Parade.
“With the leadership and skills that these three dancers bring to our team, [it] will definitely help lead us toward a successful year.” poms coach Christine Carter said.
