Cheez-Its have been a known house staple for many families throughout a century. When Cheez-Its were invented in 1921, the later stock market crash in 1929 brought many consumers trying to stock up on them. In recent years, Cheez-Its have had many adaptations like Puff’d versions, Snap’d versions and now gluten free.
As someone who has always hated Cheez-Its, I never thought that I would ever come to like them. They always stuck to my teeth and had a weird aftertaste, and I never enjoyed the texture. With the introduction of gluten-free Cheez-Its, my opinion has greatly changed.
I tried my first taste of these at a dance class. Many of my friends at dance have gluten allergies so they were all very excited about this new release. Though the taste was familiar and the look of them was the same, there were lots of differences. What first caught my eye about the new gluten-free Cheez-Its was that they did not stick to my teeth.
Surprisingly, this is what stood out to me the most.
The gluten-free version of these crackers are designed to taste the same as the original but for me, they have a bit of a crispier and lighter touch to them, which helps with the stickiness to my teeth and made me enjoy them more. Compared to other crackers like the original Cheez-Its and Goldfish, these stick less to my teeth.
From what I came to learn, the big ingredient difference between normal and gluten-free Cheez-Its is that the gluten-free blend uses rice flour, corn flour and sorghum flour instead of wheat flour. This aspect may come into play with why the gluten free Cheez-Its are less sticky to teeth.
Taste is what I consider to be the most important factor with any type of food. When it comes to the taste of these crackers, they were much lighter and more airy. I may not be the biggest fan of the taste of the original Cheez-Its, but this added touch made the flavor much better.
A component that stayed the same was the aftertaste. Both versions of these crackers have a weird grimy feeling that is left in your mouth that I do not appreciate. Packaging also stayed the same between both of these versions.
When it comes to texture, both are very comparable. The major difference between the original Cheez-Its and the gluten-free version is that the gluten-free Cheez-Its are more airy and crunchy.
Gluten-free Cheez-Its are a great snack for on the go and movie nights. This product gravitates towards an audience that cannot tolerate gluten, but it also allows them to have a common household food item to feel included with society’s snack norms.
Though the taste of these crackers was not my favorite, the gluten-free Cheez-Its are a great snack and alternative for the original ones. Many aspects of these crackers were improved. If someone were to ask me if I would recommend this product, I would.
