People often expect movies based on books to be more unsatisfactory than expected. But the box office hit “Project Hail Mary,” by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, lived up to expectations.
This movie may honestly have been the best one that I have seen. Due to its insanely immersive visual effects and the way that the characters make you feel, it truly draws you to the movie and the story.
Starring Canadian actor Ryan Gosling, the movie has attracted large audiences around the world for its incredible visual effects and design and immersive and realistic science.
The movie opens with the main character, Ryland Grace (Gosling), waking up to his current circumstances. He is abandoned in a spacecraft, further out in space than any one person has ever gone before.
Due to being put under amnesia, Ryland doesn’t remember a thing throughout the beginning of the movie. He works to regain his memories and return with new information on how to save the planet.
Ryland suddenly remembers his mission. He remembers that the reason he was sent into space was to solve the climate crisis occurring in the movie. The crisis is caused by the Petrova Line, a fictional line crossing between the sun and Venus and draining the sun of its energy, therefore causing the Earth to cool.
During Ryland’s mission to find a solution along the Petrova Line, he finds someone else searching for the same solution. An alien named Rocky from a far away planet is looking for the same things that Ryland is, and together they work to find a way to save their planets.
The two characters learn how to communicate and share their ideas. Through their comedic and selfless friendship, the audience gets drawn to their thrilling relationship, and how it grows and develops throughout the movie.
If you don’t enjoy sci-fi movies or books or aren’t interested in the scientific aspects of space, I would say this movie isn’t the one for you.
Keep in mind that the movie doesn’t have quite as much science as the book elaborates on. In the book, a lot of things get broken down and explained about how they happen or function. But in the movie, they sort of just get accomplished.
The overall heartfelt friendship between the characters shows that the directors truly thought through everything while creating the movie to reflect the book.
In doing so the directors also make the set and scenes look and feel like the same atmosphere described in the book. When the audience sees the movie they feel truly immersed in its colors, lightning and scenery.
If you have ever read the book “Project Hail Mary” by Andy Weir, you should watch the movie. The movie is just like the book, with many major plot events being replicated.
If you’ve watched “Interstellar” by Christopher Nolan, I think that you would also enjoy Project Hail Mary. The intense atmosphere and extreme science aspects of the movie show just how much the director and actors truly thought of every single piece of the movie.
