Theater: The greatest escape

Starting to play trombone during his fifth grade year . He was convinced and supported by his peers to sing and act. Making a musical family friendship and testing his limits along the way.
Senior Patrick Murphy joined choir in his sophomore year, becoming a Madrigals member and actor for the KHS Performing Arts Center. Murphy didn’t have his talent and success appear out of the random.
“A lot of it in terms of singing and acting it takes a toll on your voice you know cause you got to be loud and vocal and really use it. So keeping your voice healthy is always a good thing. In terms of theater, there is a good chunk of dancing in there so stretching is a good thing to do,” Murphy said.
Having more than 30 performances in a school year, managing school and homework can get pretty hard, but Murphy balances it out.
“You have to be very adamant about getting it done in class or during the school day but usually during rehearsals, we do have some down time you know if you’re not on stage right at that moment you can sit in the hallway and get some things done you know read a chapter or something so I always find a way to balance it out,” Murphy said.
Murphy has auditioned for the school and Kaneland Arts Initiative plays and musicals since he was in eighth grade. Every year he has made it in the productions.
Performing is done for many different purposes, some are heartwarming and others are very personal.
“In terms of performing, theater, choir, band we all really do the same thing you know it’s meant to entertain people and you know stuff in the world can get crappy and stuff like theater just gives people an escape and makes their day a little bit better so that’s why I love performing and doing what I do cause it makes people’s days a little bit better,” Murphy said.
When Murphy joined the Kaneland High School Madrigals, he expected that this singing group would be more than just a choir.
“Madrigals is a family, we’re all friends we all know each other we all laugh with each other, when we’re all together there’s nothing you don’t like about it you know. We’re all just a big family of singing weirdos,” Murphy said.
