Volunteering in the Kaneland Community

By: Shelby Harper, Editor

As Christmas season is coming, it’s the time of giving. We should all take the time this year in the Kaneland community and give to those who don’t have as much as we have in our homes and everyday life.

Feed My Starving Children

Feed My Starving Children is an organization where hundreds of people go to create packaged food for those in countries who don’t get the nutrition needed. For Christmas, this is a great gift for those in Africa, Europe, South America and Asia. When you volunteer you hand-pack rice, soy, dried vegetables and vitamins. You are welcome to volunteer during this month, next month or farther out.

The most familiar location to our school is Aurora. Site manager Christine Varsbergs said, “We can hold up to 180 volunteers per session, I love how how enthusiastic they are in making a difference. Last year in the months of November, December and January we hosted over 40,000 volunteers.” If you want to be a part of this volunteer online at the Feed My Starving Children website and reserve a spot or contact Christine at 630-851-0404.

Tails Humane Society

Tails Humane Society has opportunities designed to provide a good life to the homeless animals. They utilize volunteers Monday to Sunday from 7 a.m. to close including holidays. Teenagers aged 16-17 can be a part of the program, but they have to have their application signed by an adult. If you want to get in contact them go to their website, click on “contact us” and enter the material needed. Or if you’d like to talk with them call, 815-758-2457.

Salvation Army

With the season of giving around, people begin to see the Salvation Army people ringing their bell outside of grocery stores or anywhere they can find. Ways you can give are donating clothes and volunteering.

Volunteer coordinator Deanna Wieden said, “At the Salvation Army, we utilize many volunteers throughout the holidays to successfully carry out our Motto of ‘Doing the Most Good.’ My favorite thing when people come to volunteer is: I get to tell them our story about what services we offer in our facility as well as how many families in need that we serve within the Tri-City area. On the average, we utilize about 326 volunteers per month. For the month of December, it goes up to 650 plus volunteers not including bellringers.” If you would like to be a part of the bell ringer or volunteer system, call Deanna Wieden at 630-377-2769.
