According to Andy Williams, Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year, and many of us agree. Who doesn’t like hot chocolate and snow? Or bowl games and family time? Everyone has a different way of entertained during the holiday season, but we can all agree that a Christmas movie can bring a smile to the face of even the biggest Scrooge. That’s not up for debate. What we’re wondering is what is the best Christmas movie of all time? First let’s introduce the candidates…
Elf – Elf is a story about one of Santa’s workers (Will Ferrell) who is on a journey to find his father in New York City. The movie brings laughs to people of all ages and was the runner up amongst us.
The Grinch – Both Dr. Suess’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas and How the Grinch Stole Christmas(2000) ranked highly with many students admitting that it was their favorite as a child, but changed their opinion when they grew older. The story of a creature that absolutely hates Christmas and is warmed up to the idea by a little Who in Whoville is the plot of this family favorite.
Home Alone – The famous scene of Macaulay Culkin slapping aftershave on his face and screaming will be burnt into our memories for years to come. The personal fight of a ten year- old boy holding down his house from two burglars in a Chicago suburb makes all of us smile.
Rudolph – Rudolph the red nosed reindeer, the most famous animal made so by this Christmas tale. Rudolph is ashamed of his red nose but overcomes challenges along with his friends to become the lead of Santa’s sleigh. The song will never die and is sung by elementary students every year keeping the tale alive.
A Christmas Story – “You’ll shoot your eye out, You ‘ll shoot your eye out” this chant will never stop Moms from denying their sons a Red Ryder. A bunch of hilarious events plague this unfortunate but loving family. This classic came out in 1983 and is still watched to this day.
The Winner
It’s a Wonderful Life – The story of George Bailey the owner of a loan office, one night when he realizes that his loan office will be shut down, tries to commit suicide. Until Clarence, his guardian angel, intervenes. George mutters the famous words that he “wishes he had never been born” which prompts Clarence to show George what the town would be like without him. No movie has ever made us dive deeper into thought than It’s a Wonderful Life. This inspiring tale was made in 1946 and in our opinions, is and will always be the best Christmas movie of all time.
