Kaneland High School will be hosting a charity 5k on June 14, put together by KHS junior Seth Nosek as his Eagle project. Through this event, Nosek is able to combine two of his passions, running and Boy Scouts.

    The 5k begins with a mile-long race for kids at 7:45 AM, and this is for participants 13 and under. Following the kids’ race, the Flashlight 5k will start at 8:30 PM. Participants are encouraged to bring glow sticks, and wearing glow-in-the-dark attire should add some fun to the race. In addition to the fun atmosphere, the race is promoting awareness for a worthy cause.  

    “I’m doing this to fight pediatric cancer and raise awareness. All proceeds will be given to Cal’s Angels, my beneficiary. The 5k is dedicated to my friend Megan Sporny and other kids with cancer,” Nosek said.

     Nosek met Sporny in a running group, and they were able to enjoy what the sport has to offer.

    [Megan] was diagnosed with cancer in late October last year. When the doctors found a tumor in her spine, she had to relearn how to walk again. Fortunately, with physical therapy, she was able to also learn how to run again and raced for the first time since her diagnosis around mid-April. She still fights it today with chemotherapy and radiation and is doing awesome. Everyone says she is MEGASTRONG,” Nosek said.
