Despite being only two months into 2026, February has proven to be just as eventful of a month as any, from the Winter Olympics to the search of a missing mother and everything in between.
Nancy Guthrie Goes Missing
Nancy Guthrie, 84, mother of ‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie, was reported missing on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2026. At about 12:03 p.m., authorities received a call from the family, reporting that Guthrie was missing from her home. She was supposed to meet with a friend to watch a virtual church service early that morning.
An investigation was quickly opened partnering local, state and federal authorities. While a suspect has not yet been identified, here’s what we know:
Feb. 3 – Blood is found near Guthrie’s porch. Tests later revealed that the DNA was a match to her own.
Feb. 10 – Video released by the FBI shows a suspect arriving on Guthrie’s porch, both masked and armed carrying a backpack.
Feb. 15 – Gloves similar to those of the suspect are found two miles away. Authorities say the DNA found belongs to an unidentified male.
Feb. 17 – Authorities confirm there is no match to the DNA on record.
Feb. 23 – The FBI releases video footage showing the suspect at Guthrie’s home prior to the night she went missing.
Winter Olympics
The XXV Winter Olympics, which started Feb. 6, 2026, brought countries around the world to Milan Cortina, Italy. Norway led in medals throughout, winning a total of 18 gold. The medal table included the United States trailing with 12 gold medals, with the Netherlands and Italy tying right behind them with 10.
The opening ceremony dove deep into both Italian art and culture, giving the world a look into their customs. The ceremony also included special performances by Mariah Carey and Andrea Bocelli. The ceremony closed with the lighting of the cauldron, which took place at the Arco della Pace in Milan, simultaneous to a lighting in Cortina.
The closing ceremony was held on Feb. 22 and took place in the historic Verona Arena in Italy. Similar to the opening ceremony, the closing ceremony explored topics of Italian art and culture through music and dance. The ceremony ended with performances by Roberto Bolle and Major Lazer, prior to the official conclusion. Following the performers, the flames in both Milan and Cortina were simultaneously extinguished, marking the first time in Olympic history that two flames were extinguished at once.
The Chicago* Bears new home?
Despite being in talks for years, the location of a new stadium for the Bears to call home has finally started to become more of a reality than a dream. The stadium is projected to cost nearly 5 million dollars, making it one of the most expensive domed stadiums in the country.
Plans for the new stadium originally had it located next to the existing Soldier Field, which is located off of Lake Michigan in Chicago, however those plans changed, highlighting Arlington Heights as a possible location.
Those sights seemed close until the trajectory of the stadium was instead shifted to Indiana. News broke that the Chicago Bears had gained a newfound interest in Hammond, IN, something that would continue to seem more or less true.
“They came to us. We didn’t try to lure them because they thought there was no interest (in Illinois),” Indiana Governor Mike Braun said.
Both Illinois and Indiana lawmakers have proposed differing ideas, however Bears management seemed to start leaning towards Indiana. Indiana offered more help in funding the stadium, something that would be done through small raises in several state taxes.
According to NBC News, following Indiana’s decision, Illinois lawmakers progressed on a deal that would lock property taxes for mega developments, a category which a new stadium would fall under. Despite some progress being made in Springfield, there has not yet been a vote on the bill.
A representative for Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson recently testified in front of the House Revenue and Finance Committee, hoping the Bears would pursue a location on Chicago’s Museum Campus, where plans had originally placed the stadium.
As negotiations continue, the future of the home of the Chicago Bears is still not quite clear. For now, Indiana and Illinois continue to try to lure the Bears, but where will the Chicago Bears call home?
